A few years ago, the GPS took me down a wild route through the mountains of Appalachia on a one-lane, switchback packed road that seemed to go on forever. I was left with so many questions about the people who lived there. Bittersweet in the Hollow filled in the gaps in the stories I told myself.
What stood out the most about this book was the wonderful portrayal of each character. Without delving into complex details, Sarah Penner made every character feel unique and relatable. Each had their strengths and weaknesses, distinct behaviors, and personal reasons for their actions. It felt like I had been introduced to a real place.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book was it’s take on famed cryptid, the Moth-winged Man. I appreciated a story that recognized his folklore roots in addition to the pop culture view, while adding its own twist.
The family of James women truly made this book what it is, with multiple generations caring for one another and working together to create a cornerstone of the community. I loved how magic granted them each their own power, yet they all had their flaws to overcome. The main character experienced significant growth, facing challenges with strength and seeking help when necessary. It was refreshing to read about a realistic yet strong character.
Overall, Bittersweet in the Hollow may just be my best read of the year—at least until I pick up its sequel!
