“This isn’t the kind of fairy tale where the princess marries a prince. It’s the one where she kills him.” -Nettle & Bone Description

That’s all it took for me to know Nettle & Bone was jumping the TBR line. Really, what more could you need?

Marra is sweet, simple, and furious. Her family watches helplessly as the king abuses her sister. But Marra won’t choose kingdom over family.

She sets out on a perilous journey to kill the prince and overthrow the kingdom. With the help of a dust-wife, she builds a ragtag group of heroes along the way—including two very entertaining chickens and a unique dog.

Nettle & Bone is skillfully written, offering only a peek into its vast magical world to understand it. It’s a Grimm-style fairy tale with all the expected elements: a prince, a princess, a witch, animal companions, a fairy godmother, and that dreamy man of the woods. But they’re all playing the wrong parts—and that’s what makes it perfect.

Marra is an endearing character with no interest in family politics. She’s content living at the convent, spending her days being useful. I loved the insights into her mind; her thoughts were deeply relatable.

It had occurred to her about an hour earlier that she did not know how the minstrels would find out that she existed in order to write the sad songs in the first place, and her mind was somewhat occupied with this problem. Did you write them letters?

Marra, Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

Nettle & Bone is absolutely deserving of its many recognitions, including the Hugo Award in 2023.
